LUNCH WITH CHUCK - A BROWN BAG DISCUSSION SERIES
The Historical Society is pleased to present the culmination of volunteer Chuck Dudley’s extensive research on the properties in Stowe’s Center Village. This is a Brown Bag Lunch Series where you are invited to the Community Room at the rear of the Library with your lunch in hand to hear and participate in five presentations:
The first session (Jan. 23) will focus on the emergence of SCV from other villages in Stowe during the early to mid 1800’s. Topics will include population growth, family connections, the role of women, types of occupations and the subdivision of land. Further, there was land speculation, epidemics and controversial events that affected Stowe’s history.
The homes and families of Maple Street will be discussed in the second session (Feb. 6). Many of these homes stayed in families for a longtime over several generations. Also, there were several ways that homes were passed from generation to generation.
The third session (Mar. 5) focuses on Sunset, Pleasant and School Street triangle. Development of this area was triggered by a controversial event in the late 1830’s. Also, water rights played a very important role.
Main Street has had three distinctive eras. This fourth session (Mar. 19) discusses its history prior to the 1860’s, the Mount Mansfield Hotel era and the post 1889 hotel fire period. This includes the development along Main, Park, Pond and Depot Streets.
The fifth discussion (Apr. 9) focuses on development along the Waterbury River and the West Branch. Several businesses emerged along the river. In addition, development of this area was affected by controversy.
So, mark your calendars for these brown bag gatherings, and be sure to bring your lunch! Talks will begin promptly at 12:00. A beverage will be provided.
The first of the "Lunch With Chuck" series will be held on
